    DOOM ETERNAL LORE: Hayden's character wasn't changed or badly retconned between 2016 and Eternal, we just misunderstood how Argent Energy works. The Argent Energy in 2016 and the Argent Energy in Eternal are two completely different substances.

    So I see a common sentiment around here that Eternal retconned Samuel Hayden's character. Even discounting the revelation that he was the Seraphim, Hayden goes from loving and seeing Argent Energy as a boon in 2016 to outright hating it and considering it to be an unholy sin in Eternal. Why?

    We all assumed this was a messy retcon, some bad writing. We were wrong. This isn't a plothole at all, 2016 actually explained this in its codex, and Samuel alluded to it again in Eternal.

    From "The UAC: A Brief History":

    With the discovery of the Argent Fracture (a transdimensional stream of unrefined Argent plasma) in 2095, settling and mining Mars became both practical and essential to meet the vast energy demands of Earth. However, the need for atmospheric conversion and terraforming of the Red Planet was a task that seemed insurmountable to all but one corporation - the UAC. Through their diligent dedication to technological advancement and forward-thinking, an outpost was established in MTC 2096 to extract Argent plasma from the Fracture. When this plasma is subjected to the UAC's Fermionic Transference Pattern, Argent Energy is produced.

    The 2016 Codex confirms that the UAC isn't harvesting Argent Energy. They're harvesting Argent Plasma, and refining it with their technology into usable energy.

    Doom Eternal tells us that Argent Energy is produced by combining Wraith energy and Hell's Essence, which is the souls of humans. Hayden decries this as a horrible sin, which confused people because he outright obsessed over Argent Energy in 2016. Here's the thing - these aren't the same forms of Argent Energy.

    "Argent Plasma" is Wraith energy. Hell gets it from the Well, and it spreads throughout Hell. The UAC harvests it with their technology, turning it into Argent Energy - a clean and perfect energy source.

    That's not what Hell is doing. They're supplanting Wraith energy with human souls.

    In short, Hayden was right in Doom 2016, and we were wrong for assuming this was a retcon or mistake. Samuel Hayden found his own process of manufacturing and creating Argent Energy completely separate from how Hell handled it, a way that didn't require genocide and torture. He decries the Khan's process because it has to involve torture, and his method didn't. He even alludes to this in Eternal:

    "I assure you, this could have been avoided under... different leadership."

    He's saying that, if he were leading the Maykrs, they never would've needed Hell's Essence, because he himself figured out how to create Argent Energy without Hell's Essence.

    TL;DR: Hugo and the writers were right, we were wrong, everyone who criticized them for retconning Hayden's character in regards to Argent Energy was wrong and didn't pay attention. Including me.

    After weeks and weeks of practicing and attempts, I finally got it. Saving throw activating in the Seraphim fight was probably the scariest moment of the run. Only got the base campaign left now, here I come >:)
