    • You're allowed to be upset about the update as long as you are civil about it. Do not incite violence towards id Software, Bethesda, or any other Redditor. Do not be an asshole.

    The response from this community with regards to the anti-cheat software has been very strong, but along the way the details have become distorted and warped such that now we're seeing comments referring to the game as malware or spyware. I'm not defending the addition of anti cheat, but I think it's important to be accurate when describing this. People who don't know much about this can be misled by these claims, as I was when I first saw this until I looked into it more deeply.

    The inherent fact that this software runs at ring 0, or "kernel level" does NOT make it malware. Virtually all anti-cheat software has to run at this level to be effective, because cheaters use kernel drivers to cheat. Operating at a level below that makes the software easy to bypass by cheaters, and this is why software like Battleye and Easy Anti Cheat all operate at this level as well. Popular games like Apex Legends and Fortnite use this software, so it is important to note that this is not a new and unprecedented phenomenon.     Each time a piece of software running at ring 0 is introduced to a system, it is an additional risk being taken by the user, but not as much as many seem to think. Anti-cheat is not alone in operating at this level, and in fact most malware does not operate at this level. The problem here is not that this anti-cheat exists at the kernel level, but rather the implementation of it.

    Even though the software doesn't run all the time like Valorant's, it does run whenever the game is open, even for singleplayer. If this software had been in the game from the start, users not comfortable with the additional risk could have avoided it, or there could have been an option to play singleplayer without the software being installed. Installing it nearly 2 months after the game is released, and making it mandatory even for singleplayer, is one of the real problems here. The others being that for some users it has come at a significant cost to stability and performance, and that the game went from running flawlessly on linux to not working at all.

    This whole incident is starting to look more and more like a repeat of the OST incident, so I think focusing on these details is important. Being upset about this is reasonable, calling the game malware is not. This is a complicated issue, and trying to summarize or oversimplify too much can lead to exaggerations and inaccuracies.
