Posted: 21 Apr 2020 06:59 AM PDT Over the past few days, we've all (hopefully) been enjoying the DOOM: Eternal soundtrack, either through the official release, or via uploads on YouTube (courtesy of Hai Dudu Two). However, you might notice that a few of the tracks seem off - they don't sound as crisp, or some of the timings are wonky, for example, and you'd be right. Around two months ago, Mick commented on a (totally rad) cover of The Only Thing They Fear Is You on YouTube, saying: "Fun Fact: All those stupid "time signature changes" are a result of someone from marketing piecing this track together without any musical knowledge.". Twitter user 'thatADCguy' posted an image comparing the D16 track 'BFG Division' that we all know and love, to it's 2020 counterpart, noting the differences in their audio tracks (see thread here). I'm not going to go into detail, as I don't fully understand the explanations, but thatADCguy goes on to explain that the difference in quality is likely a result of poor mixing and balancing. Mick Gordon chimed in (see reply here), stating that he didn't mix that track, and he wouldn't have done it that way. He goes on to say that the small handful of tracks he mixed himself would be easily noticeable. For those interested, those tracks are:
Reddit user /u/MedicalMilk contacted Mick on Instagram, and created this post about Mick's reply, in which he says he's unlikely to work with them (iD and/or Bethesda) again. This, obviously, is not a confirmation of whether the problem is with iD or Bethesda, and further, doesn't confirm that he is leaving iD or Bethesda, and, not to disparage /u/MedicalMilk, but DM's can very easily be fabricated, so take this, like everything, with a grain of salt. Fraser Brown, of PC Gamer's Scotland office, reached out to Mick, and he said: "I take a lot of pride in my work. It's all I do, and I pour my heart and soul into it." He also added that he's still trying to understand the situation, and had no further comments. It's immensely disappointing to hear this, and I feel sorry for Mick that his worked has been rushed and released without him being 100% proud of it, however: it is very important to understand that it's unlikely we have the full picture here, and it would be irresponsible and rash of anyone to get up in arms and begin to point the blame. There may have been setbacks that we aren't aware of, or maybe something happened internally. The point is: we don't know. I've seen a lot of misinformation floating around pointing fingers at iD, at Bethesda, and that is the wrong thing to start doing. Creating petitions aimed at either party and sending posts directing the blame will likely only cause bad blood between the community and the developers, and feed the controversy surrounding this topic, which may only cement Mick's decision (if there has even been one made), that he won't work with iD and/or Bethesda again. We're all huge fans of Mick and his work, and I think it's important that we remain level headed and stop witchunting people at both iD and Bethesda. It's my belief, also, that it's more important for us to just stay out of it. These issues, if they are issues at all, are between Mick, iD, and Bethesda, and I don't think it's our place to get involved. EDIT: I think my closing points are worded poorly - they were aimed more specifically at various posts and comments I've seen that are wholly negative, and directed at specific parties. To clarify, I don't at all believe that it is wrong for the community to voice their opinions, but I think it's crucial that we remain objective and calm when we do. In scrolling through my timeline on twitter, and having seen a number of posts regarding this subject, I've seen various individuals direct their frustrations at "Bethesda's shitty marketing team", or the "incapable sound design team at iD", which I understand, but I ultimately think is wrong and uncalled for. I am also frustrated, and I too want to support Mick, but I don't think the unjustified direction of that anger at specific teams or individuals is warranted. [link] [comments] | ||
