End of the year community cleanup? End of the year community cleanup.

Hey all, /r/Doom here, and if you're new to the sub, this is our arbitrary time of the... whenever... where we let the community know about our upcoming changes and ask everyone what we can do to do better. We planned to do this at the start of November before Doom Eternal launched, but that obviously got delayed. However, we strongly believe in taking a lot of time to think over these changes, so rather than wasting times twiddling our thumbs waiting for some other opportune time. Let's kick things off:

    • Well we're not really "changing" anything per say, but we're cleaning up a lot of mess.

One of the more common problems we've ran into is pretty much getting people to read our rules. We're not going to shove it into people's faces, as the real problem is people don't know where to look. on top of that, new reddit throws a god damn wrench into the system and it wasn't until a few months after our last rule update that we realized we neglected new/mobile reddit access to our rules. Fucking raw.

If you're active on this sub, and if you've been unfortunate enough to have a post removed, you may have received a canned response from us, something along the lines of:

Removed as per Rule 1: Post is low effort.

The way we plan on making our rules easier to access, we'll start linking directly to the rule in question with our canned responses, that way any user regardless of what version of Reddit they're using, regardless of device, there will be a direct way to our rules. This should hopefully clear up any confusion for everyone in the future on how we do things here.

Another thing we'll be taking advantage of is that our rules will be hosted on a Wiki page. We've experimented with this on our Rule 1 explanations, the "low effort" part of it, but after some careful thinking, we managed to dilute it better. What's advantageous about this set up is we can take as much space as we need to clarify what we mean by our rules. As an example, a common misinterpretation we've had is our cross community drama rule, which is in place because every now and then people like to come into here to complain about being banned on ZDoom or Doomworld. Not that the Doom content features a different community.

If you would like to see this upcoming page, you can view it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Doom/wiki/index/fullruleexplanations

To reiterate, none of our rules have changed (yet, see below), we're just trying to do a better job at explaining them and being transparent.

    • In the future, we'll be relaxing our "surface content" and "low effort" rule.

The primary reason we have these rules in place is to mitigate the posts where it's just random gameplay clips, barely relatable content, and advertising streams and content that otherwise provide no merit. These posts clog up the feed and don't offer anything worthwhile.

    However...

Doom Eternal is coming! This means we're going to be receiving a lot of fresh and new content, and we're definitely not going to tell people to take that somewhere else. So as a preemptive announcement, on the day of Doom Eternal's launch, we will relax our efforts on Doom Eternal posts.

    • And finally, what can we do better?

No one on this mod team is against changing our rules to better suit the community. We want to provide a healthy environment for everyone that has a nice balance. Short and sweet, let us know what you think we can change or if we should keep going the course! Nothing else to say!

Does Saving in Doom 1/2/TNT/Plutonia is considered cheating?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 07:13 PM PST

I have this question in my head for a long time. I was playing Sunlust (A Doom 2 Megawad) on Ultra-Nightmare and i couldn't beat the second level in only one go, i wanted to save because it would make it easy but also i thought that saving was considering cheating.

I wanted to hear other opinions about if saving is cheating or not, so i did come here. (Also Sunlust is just a megawad, it doesn't change any of the mechanics)
